Based in Champaign, Illinois, CodexNovus is ideally placed to tap the expertise of some of the finest engineering talent in the world – the men and women of the University of Illinois, the birthplace of Mosaic and the Internet.

The Early Years

CodexNovus was first conceived in 1978, when Hugo Feugen, then a young engineer, went to an IMAX movie for the first time. Blown away by the experience, Feugen envisioned a product that would enable users to capture in high resolution a person’s favorite moments and experiences, both in still images and in full-motion video, and would enable them to store, organize, and revisit them whenever they wished, all in the comfort of their own home.

At the time, digital video was still in its
infancy. But Mr. Feugen, determined to test the limits of the technology, steeped himself in compression techniques and development tools for both audio and video.

In March of 2000, after several years of studying, experimenting, and improving on the latest video and audio compression algorithms, Feugen, by then already renowned for developing Microsoft’s Flight Simulator, one of the most overwhelmingly successful software programs of all time, formed CodexNovus.

Prototypes

The first designs were focused on producing a portable personal audio/video device to store the user’s entire music and video library, and provide instant access to their collection using a very simple, familiar user interface, controlled much like a DVD player or VCR. The idea of using a simple remote control that was already very comfortable to the end user was central to the concept. As the initial products began to take shape, it became obvious that HDcodex, the proprietary CodexNovus user interface and operating system, represented a significant step forward in ease of use and performance. Because of its remarkable elegance, utility and simplicity, it is ideal as a point-of-purchase demonstration tool for dealers servicing an emerging home theatre market.

A New Paradigm

It became obvious that HDcodex represented a powerful evolution in media playback technology. For the first time, CodexNovus technology made it possible for dealers to show the full potential of high definition video in a controlled environment with content that was available on demand. This was a big step up compared to the unreliability of playback systems up to that time. CodexNovus and HDcodex also proved to be reliable solutions in several commercial market applications, such as tradeshows and public display venues for example, where reliability and predictability are key concerns.

The term codex novus is Latin for "new
book," which is the essence of what the company has set out to create. Just as love letters of our youth have largely given way to private chat rooms in cyberspace, the old paper and ink of books are giving way to ephemeral patterns of electrons; HDcodex will empower users by giving them the ability to consolidate, organize, and access their music, their pictures, and their video libraries from anywhere in their home whenever they want, using an interface that is so elegant and intuitive that every one in the home can quickly become fluent in the language of the New Book – the language of CodexNovus.
